Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Academic Writing

The Department of Higher Mathematics was established in May 1975. The staff of the newly-formed department, namely 9 teachers and 1 senior laboratory assistant, who were the former staff members of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Disciplines, initially headed by PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Ivan Malishchuk, and at the time of reorganization - by a senior lecturer Ihor Bezemskyi.  The newly-formed department was headed by PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Oleksiy Andrukhov, the only staff member at that time having a scientific degree and academic title. At the very beginning, there were also 3 senior lecturers (Valentyna Dorokhova, Mykola Lysak, and Volodymyr Tykhyi), and 6 teachers (Nataliia Levchyk, Volodymyr Ponedilok, Liudmyla Vovk, Oleksandr Andreiev, Mykola Sierov, and Maria Sierova) and 1 senior laboratory assistant (Liudmyla Mykhailova).

The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department provided teaching of Higher Mathematics, Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Programming and Theoretical Mechanics at four faculties of the university (of that time Agricultural Institute), namely the Agricultural Mechanization Faculty, Faculty of Economics, Agricultural and Zootechnical Faculties. In addition, teachers conducted classes in Elementary Mathematics at the Preparatory Department of the institute.

December 1988 through August 2011 the department was headed by PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Anatolii Yurchyk.

At different times the following members were enlisted in the teaching staff of the department: V.O. Dorokhova, M.I. Lysak, V.H. Tykhyi, N.S. Levchyk, V.F. Ponedilok, L.D. Vovk, О.А. Andreiev, M.I. Sierov, M.M. Sierova, I.B. Petrov, M.A. Fuhelo, O.M. Morhun, I.I. Filimonchuk, A.M. Kalyniuk.

During its existence, the department has undergone many changes and reorganizations. Thus, in 2000 the name of the department was changed to the Department of Mathematical Disciplines. On September 1, 2011, the department, according to the order of the rector, was renamed the Department of Mathematical Subjects and Modeling. The renamed department was headed by PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Vasyl Luchyk. Since 2014 the department has been headed by PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor Iryna Semenyshyna.

In 2015, as a result of the university faculties restructuring, the department became part of the joint Department of Physics, Mathematics and General Engineering Disciplines at the Faculty of Engineering. Then the department was headed by PhD in Engineering, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine - Ivan Bendera.

On September 4, 2017, the department was restored as an independent structural unit - Department of Mathematical Subjects and Modeling and headed by PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor Andrii Hromyk.

In August 2019, as a result of the university restructuring, the department was renamed the Department of Mathematical Subjects, Computer Science and Modeling of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Distance Education of the State Agrarian and Engineering University in Podilia. On September 1, 2021, the department was renamed the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Academic Writing of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Correspondence and Distance Education of the State Agrarian and Engineering University in Podilia (Since November 24, 2021 - Higher Educational Institution "Podillia State University")

The teaching staff of the department aims at ensuring that students master the logical structures of Mathematics, which constitute the fundamental mathematical basis, and without which quality training is impossible. Students within their specialty must be able to: turn professional issues into mathematical problems; choose mathematical methods for solving formulated problems; apply high-quality mathematical methods with the use of modern computer technology; formulate practical recommendations on the research subject, with the consideration of the conducted mathematical analysis.

The department provides instruction in the following disciplines: "Higher Mathematics", "Applied Mathematics", "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics", "Methods and Models of  Mathematical Economics ", "Mathematical Methods and Models", "Research into Transport Systems Operations", " Information Technologies”, “Operational and Variational Calculus”, “ Computer Modeling of Complex Economic Systems”,“ Academic Writing ”, “Academic Writing and Academic Integrity ”.

Scientific areas of the Department:

  • ordinary differential and difference equations in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces;
  • boundary-value and mixed problems for partial differential equations and mathematical physics equations;
  • development of students’ professional competencies while instructing mathematical disciplines;
  • information technology in management;
  • formation of speech culture of students in higher education institutions.

Teachers systematically publish the research findings in mathematical journals, fellow-university bulletins and other professional publications. The department participates in all-Ukrainian and international scientific and practical conferences, symposia, and seminars. In recent years, teachers of the department have published 5 monographs, more than 120 research papers, abstracts and conference proceedings, and 15 textbooks.

During the years of the department's existence, the educational process has been carried out at a high scientific and methodological level. At the same time, the role of students' independent work is growing, with increasing requirements for the quality of their knowledge, skills and abilities. The educational process intensification and enhancing the efficiency of credit-rating forms of control are of great importance. The department also has student research groups: "Application of mathematical methods in research", "Advances in mathematical education", "Application of information and computer technologies in education and research", and "Mathematical studies".

Prospective areas of the department development include:

  • modernization of mathematical subjects classes by accomplishing them with modern findings in the field;
  • implementation of computer-oriented methodological systems of education based on the latest pedagogical and information-communication technologies with the use of educational complexes, electronic textbooks and manuals, control and training computer software;
  • promoting the creation of an educational and scientific informational environment at the university, which will provide an opportunity to effectively use ICT for classroom activities, control activities, organization of research activities and, in particular, independent work of full-time, part-time and distance learning students;
  • gradual deployment of web-based methodological training systems to provide both traditional and electronic, distance and mobile forms of study;
  • implementation of modern mathematical study packages in the educational process, which will provide an opportunity to increase the level of students' professional training, as well as their mathematical and information culture, so they could become future professionals competitive in the international labour market.
