The department focuses on improving the quality of education, introducing modern agricultural technologies into the educational process, and training competitive professionals for the agrarian sector.
The department is the graduating unit for the specialty 201, H1 “Agronomy.”
Historical background
In 1920 (August 9), upon the initiative of Professor M. I. Herashchenko, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of Kamianets-Podilskyi State University, a Department (Section) of General and Private Crop Production was established, where Associate Professor V. P. Khranevych began teaching a course on cultivated plants and grassland management.

- 1924–1934 – Head of the Department: Professor V. P. Shyvan.
- In January 1927, four departments of the Agronomy Faculty were merged into the Department of Nature, Agriculture, and Crops of Podillia, which included 29 staff members and 24 postgraduate students.
- From October 26, 1954, after the restoration of Kamianets-Podilskyi Agricultural Institute, the Agronomy Faculty resumed its work.
- 1954–1958 – Head of the Department of Crop Production and Dean of the Faculty: Associate Professor N. S. Babchenko.

- 1970–1973 – Head of the Department: Professor M. P. Perepichko.
- 1973–2005 – Head of the Department of Crop Production, Breeding and Seed Production: Professor O. S. Alekseeva.
- 2005–2008 – Head of the Department of Crop Production, Breeding, Seed Production and Genetics: Professor I. M. Kovtunik.
- 2003–2015 – The Department of Fodder Production (since 1983) was reorganized into the Department of Crop Production and Fodder Production, headed by Professor M. I. Bakhmat.
- 2008–2015 – The Department of Breeding, Seed Production and Genetics was reorganized into the Department of Breeding, Seed Production and General Biological Disciplines, headed by Professor O. S. Horash.
- 2015–2019 – Two departments were merged into one – the Department of Crop Production, Breeding and Seed Production, headed by Professor O. S. Horash.
- 2019 – The department was reorganized into the Department of Crop Production and Fodder Production, headed by Professor M. I. Bakhmat.
- 2021 – The department was reorganized into the Department of Crop Production, Breeding and Seed Production, headed by Professor Veronika Khomina.
The department has five lecture rooms equipped with stands, instruments, and teaching materials for laboratory and practical classes. Four multimedia projectors and a widescreen multimedia monitor are installed in the classrooms. A modern computer lab with ten Internet-connected computers supports courses on research methodology.

Research methodology and organization of dissertation work
At the department, there is a crop science laboratory that focuses on the study of field agricultural crops. Collections of cereal, groat, industrial, and bioenergy plants have been established. This enables the department to conduct practical classes in related disciplines and to deepen the study of the biological and morphological characteristics of field crops.
Educational field practices are carried out by the department’s leading lecturers in accordance with the academic workload. For each discipline that includes practical training, a working program for field practice has been developed. Before the start of practice, all students undergo safety training and sign the safety instruction logbook at the department.
Methodological work
Each year, the department’s staff updates the necessary educational and methodological materials, develops curricula, and creates comprehensive teaching packages for all disciplines.
Distance learning and knowledge assessment through the Moodle online system are actively implemented.
In recent years, the department has produced numerous teaching materials, including textbooks and manuals such as:
- Technological Fundamentals of Organic Agriculture and Crop Production (M. I. Bakhmat, Yu. V. Khmelyanchyshyn, O. M. Bakhmat)
- Cereal Crops: A Textbook (O. V. Kvashchuk, M. M. Suchek, V. Ya. Khomina, O. D. Pastukh)
- Agroecological and Theoretical Basis of Medicinal and Essential Oil Crop Cultivation in the Western Forest-Steppe (V. Ya. Khomina)

Research Work
The academic staff of the department actively conducts scientific research aimed at improving technologies for cultivating agricultural crops, particularly under different natural and climatic conditions. The results of these studies are regularly presented at conferences and seminars and are published in professional scientific journals.
An important area of the department’s work is the involvement of students in research activities. Under the supervision of their academic advisors, students carry out individual research projects, participate in scientific competitions, and present their findings at student conferences.
Each year, the department organizes the All-Ukrainian Online Conference “Innovative Technologies in Crop Production”, the proceedings of which reflect current trends and achievements in agricultural science.
Scientific student groups of the department:
